Meaning of Ayurveda :
आयुर्वेदः संस्कृतस्य प्राचीनतमः स्वास्थ्यविज्ञानग्रन्थः अस्ति । आयुर्वेदः “आयुः” इति शब्दद्वयेन निर्मितः “वेदः” “आयुः” जीवनस्य वा वयसः प्रतीकः, “वेदः” ज्ञानस्य प्रतीकः । अतः आयुर्वेदः जीवनविज्ञानम् इति विवक्षितः । आयुर्वेदस्य मुख्यं उद्देश्यं रोगाणां निवारणं, आरोग्यस्य निर्वाहः च अस्ति । एषा उपचारविधिः पञ्चतत्त्वानां (पृथिवी, जलं, अग्निः, वायुः, आकाशः च) सिद्धान्ते आधारिता अस्ति । आयुर्वेदेऽपि शरीरस्य त्रयः दोषाः महत्त्वपूर्णाः इति मन्यन्ते- वायुः, पित्तः, कफः च । अस्य समन्वयेन शरीरं स्वस्थं भवति । आयुर्वेदस्य प्रमुखाः ग्रन्थाः शरङ्गधरसंहिता, चरकसंहिता, सुश्रुतसंहिता, अष्टाङ्गह्रिदयः च सन्ति । सुश्रुतः शल्यक्रियायाः प्रवर्तकः इति प्रसिद्धः अस्ति । आयुर्वेदे न केवलं रोगनिवारणं अपितु स्वास्थ्यं निर्वाहयितुं आयुः दीर्घं कर्तुं च लक्ष्यं भवति । सर्वेषां अङ्गानाम् सन्तुलनं, आहारः, निद्रा, दैनन्दिनं च आयुर्वेदे अपि महत् महत्त्वम् अस्ति ।
